Áine MacNeill presents at BMAF Annual Conference 2008

Áine MacNeill presented a paper on “The use of a social interaction-based model to enhance first year student elearning and retention – an exploratory study of BSc Marketing students”. She co-presented this paper with Gillian Armstrong and Una McMahon-Beattie, lecturers in the School of Marketing, Entrepreneurship + Strategy at the University of Ulster.

Poster session at BMAF Annual Conference 2008

Áine MacNeill and Karen Virapen presented a poster entitled “Designing effective learning and teaching solutions” at the BMAF Annual Conference in Edinburgh. The poster explained how to use the Hybrid Learning Model for teaching and learning, along with some potential uses. HLM cards - the buzz on the blogosphere

The HLM cards have been out now for a while, and are beginning to get recognition as a useful learning design tool. But what have bloggers been saying about them?

By and large, the response has been very positive. One of the first bloggers to respond was Jim Judges of Jim's e-learning blog - he commented that the Hybrid Learning Model is "well presented, nice and colourful and seems very teacher friendly" and would fit well when planning out learning.

Grainne Conole of e4innovation.com had this to say: "nice, simple and effective by the look of it. I particularly like the idea of the design flashcards." Grainne is a professor of e-learning on the Open University website.

Geoff Petty also references the Hybrid Learning Model in his document, Evidence Based ICT (Word document), calling the cards 'well detailed' in their approach.

All in all, commenters were positive in their reaction to the cards, and hopefully as word spreads there will be a lot more word-of-mouth referrals like this.

Alan Masson presented at the 4th TENCompetence Open Workshop, Madrid. Alan presented a paper entitled “Development and use of the Hybrid Learning Model: Bringing learning and teaching together.” The theme of this conference was “Empowering Learners for Lifelong Competence Development: Pedagogical, organisational and Technological Issues”. This has now been submitted as a full paper offering to the iJET journal.
