Paper published on the development and use of the Hybrid Learning Model

CIES have had a paper published in the 'International Journal of Emerging Technologies in Learning' (iJET) following on from the 4th TenCompetence Open Workshop in Madrid. The paper is entitled 'The Hybrid Learning Model - A Framework for Teaching and Learning Practice' authored by Alan Masson, Áine MacNeill, Colette Murphy & Vilinda Ross.

It details the development and use of the Hybrid Learning Model within the University of Ulster
and examines the effectiveness of this Model in articulating, reflecting on, designing, evaluating and sharing academic practice.

Áine MacNeill and Karen Virapen presented a poster entitled “Designing effective learning and teaching solutions” at the BMAF Annual Conference in Edinburgh. The poster explained how to use the Hybrid Learning Model for teaching and learning, along with some potential uses. HLM cards - the buzz on the blogosphere

The HLM cards have been out now for a while, and are beginning to get recognition as a useful learning design tool. But what have bloggers been saying about them?

By and large, the response has been very positive. One of the first bloggers to respond was Jim Judges of Jim's e-learning blog - he commented that the Hybrid Learning Model is "well presented, nice and colourful and seems very teacher friendly" and would fit well when planning out learning.

Grainne Conole of e4innovation.com had this to say: "nice, simple and effective by the look of it. I particularly like the idea of the design flashcards." Grainne is a professor of e-learning on the Open University website.

Geoff Petty also references the Hybrid Learning Model in his document, Evidence Based ICT (Word document), calling the cards 'well detailed' in their approach.

All in all, commenters were positive in their reaction to the cards, and hopefully as word spreads there will be a lot more word-of-mouth referrals like this.

Alan presented a paper entitled “Development and use of the Hybrid Learning Model: Bringing learning and teaching together.” The theme of this conference was “Empowering Learners for Lifelong Competence Development: Pedagogical, organisational and Technological Issues”. This has now been submitted as a full paper offering to the iJET journal.

First CIES Consultative Forum takes place

The first consultative forum on the tools and services currently provided and in development by the CIES project team was presented to the Faculty's Teaching and Learning coordinators and E-Learning coordinators.

Objectives of the forum include:

Providing an update on the work of the CIES
Ensuring CIES tools are needs focused and tailored to meet the current demands on academic and support staff within Faculties
To explore opportunities for academic staff to adapt CIES tools and services
To form working partnerships with appointed Faculty e-Learning coordinators, and Teaching and Learning coordinators

The Forum will continue to meet on a bi-annual basis.

CETL Information Session and Learning Design Workshops

The Centre of Excellence for Teaching and Learning for Utilising Institutional E-Learning Services (CIES) held an Information Session on the Tools and Services available to enhance the Student's Learning experience.

The information session was followed by a choice of workshops focusing on the Hybrid Learning Model being developed by the CIES project team. The ‘Designing for Learning Workshop’ aimed to benefit staff in planning, designing and orchestrating learning activities in a blended environment and the ‘Capturing and Disseminating Workshop’ focused on capturing innovative practice and promotes sharing and reusing of innovative and effective pedagogic designs.
